Passing the Torch of the Christian Faith and the Missionary Movement

Passing the Torch of the Christian Faith and the Missionary Movement

Four Schmitts were students this year. We took an online church history course the past ten weeks with sixty other Cru staff. Besides reading a 500-page text, we’ve participated in research, discussion, and memory work.  (About the other students in the picture: Jenn has one month to go for her senior year; Josh is halfway through his masters program.)

During our study, we’ve come to deeply appreciate the great sacrifices that so many have made over the centuries for the cause of the Christian faith.  Their sacrifices made it possible for the Gospel to be carried to our shores during the early formation of our country and also laid the foundation for the religious freedoms we enjoy today.

Particularly during the Protestant Reformation, men and women put their lives and fortunes on the line for what they believed. More

A Kazakh Cabbie

A Kazakh Cabbie

Today I decided that perhaps the greatest lessons about God are learned in the taxi-cabs of life. This afternoon is a good example. Jaks, the Kazakh cabbie, started out having to turn back to the taxi stand because he didn’t know where to go. Once we got going I shared with him that I’d been in Kazakhstan before as a missionary, which opened the door for him to share his Muslim faith with me. And I don’t mean just casually. The kid was passionate! Despite his broken English he definitely got his point across. In fact, at one point in the 20 minute ride, he handed me his personal phone so I could watch a Muslim leader of some kind challenge a Bible-believing minister. More

God’s Direction for Your Life

About twelve years ago, I heard a talk on Ephesians 2: 8 – 9 – 10:

God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it. For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.

The speaker , Judy Douglass, explained that “God’s masterpiece” in the Greek could also be translated, “God’s poem.” After the message, I felt deeply loved, knowing that God, the Master artist, created me for a purpose. I took Judy’s challenge to heart and prayed about the verse and what it meant for me. After two weeks of focusing on this passage, I sensed God’s clear direction which I am still following today. I have a deep sense of fulfillment and also of challenge, because God has given my life meaning.

Have you spent time in prayer, asking God to reveal His direction for your life?

I’ve Fallen… (via Kindling)

Shipwreck in a Storm by Willem van Diest 1600s

For today’s faith lesson, I’m sharing this post by my friend, Judy, from her blog, Kindling.

“I was walking—quickly—through the busy Cincinnati airport.  Then it happened.   You know, how sometimes the sole of your shoe catches on carpet?  Yep.  Next thing I knew, I was sprawled face down on said carpet, with my purse contents strewn widely. Was I hurt?  It took a moment to determine that only my dignity was seriously injured…

“If only it were so easy in the relationships and responsibilities of our lives…”  Read More via Kindling

NOTE: This painting, Shipwreck in a Storm, by Willem van Diest, is in the public domain.  The accompanying notes in Wikipedia read:

“Van Diest’s seascapes are full of vivid details, for example, the figures clinging to the wreckage as ships break up in a violent storm. Protestant sermons and popular literature urged the Dutch to see moral lessons in nature and everyday life. Whether a shopkeeper or ship owner, someone seeing such a painting in a home might well reflect upon the soul on its journey through a life fraught with dangers.”
