Birding at Disney Wilderness Preserve

Last week, I took a morning off and went birdwatching  with my neighbor, Sheila.  We decided to visit the Disney Wilderness Preserve.  According to their website:

“Heavily logged and used as ranchland for decades, the preserve is restored very near to its original state. (Records remain from the area’s first Spanish missionaries.) Large-scale wetland and upland restoration has included the removal of non-native, invasive plants and grasses and the removal of agricultural ditches.”

It was fascinating to think the area looked just as the early Spanish explorers would’ve found it.

The Preserve is also working with The Nature Conservancy to re-establish the endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker in the preserve. I’ll definitely come back some time and look for them.  (This woodpecker can only be found in the United States.)

We discovered a baby gopher tortoise on our path.   I’ve seen adult gopher tortoises before (at about 15″ across); this baby was about 2″ across!  I used this great online key for identifying turtles to figure out what this little fellow was.

If you’d like to know, we spotted: gopher tortoise, stork, sandhill crane, little blue heron, greater yellowlegs, osprey, red-bellied woodpecker, pine warbler, turkey, eastern meadowlark, loggerhead shrike, catbird, tufted titmouse, and hundreds of tree swallows.  We also saw a number of butterflies, but didn’t identify them.

Enjoy some pictures of  the birds, the tortoise, and the preserve itself.

Alafia River State Park

Mike and I enjoyed a beautiful Florida day last month.

We bought a ticket to go to an anniversary celebration for our local Moody Radio station, so we decided to go early to Alafia River State Park near Tampa, Florida.  This new park is primarily for mountain biking.  In Florida?  Yes, you heard me right.  The park is really an overgrown Phosphate strip mine.  The terrain is very uneven and local bike clubs have built dozens of trails.  The park also has hiking and equestrian trails.  The campground was overflowing with bikers who were attending a weekend event.  We discovered, too, that admission was free for all state parks on Veterans’ Day.

It was a gorgeous day for a hike and the lighting was perfect for photography.  Maybe an entomologist can tell me what this insect is in the photo.  (See our slide show of our day at Alafia River.)

Toward the end of our visit at the park, I ran to get a photo of bikers going down a steep curve. Unfortunately, my foot turned on a root.  More than a month later, I’m still recovering from an acute sprained ankle!  (You can see the photo of the bikers in the slide show.)

I hobbled back to the car and we found a Panera Bread to buy some dinner.  Panera’s was really kind to give us a bag so I could elevate and ice my ankle.

We arrived for the 50th anniversary celebration at a very large church (seemingly out in the middle of nowhere… probably a bedroom community for Tampa and Sarasota).  We wanted to hear Ravi Zacharias and Selah.  We left a bit early and were home by 11:30.  We had a great day (except for my ankle injury, of course.)

A Visit to DeLeon Springs State Park

We went to visit Jenn at Stetson University recently.

We picked her up and headed over to one of our favorite places, DeLeon Springs State Park, which is not very far from Stetson (or DeLand, Florida).

The Old Spanish Sugar Mill restaurant is in the park (so you’ll need to pay park admission if you go).  We ate in the mill and made our pancakes at our table.  (See a 2006 photo of Mike making pancakes at the restaurant).  It’s a fun place for breakfast!

A lot of people were enjoying a beautiful day at the park.  Besides the usual swimming, boating, and hiking,  we saw cave divers who had just finished scuba diving in the spring.

Before our hike, we looked through the small visitor center and chatted with ladies who were demonstrating crafts that morning.  In learning about the park’s history, we chuckled at a short video of Queenie, the water-skiing elephant who performed at DeLeon Springs in the 50’s when it was a private park.  In writing this post, I learned that Queenie just died on June 3rd.

On one of our visits to the park about two years ago, we took the 50-minute eco/history boat tour which follows the water from the spring as it flows into Lake Woodruff.

MORE PHOTOS: I made a short slide show of our visit to DeLeon Springs with pictures of our hike.

Looking for Dolphins

We were treated to an ecotour yesterday. The guide for the Wild Dolphin Ecotour explained a lot about the ecology and industry surrounding Tampa Bay. We stopped briefly at a wildlife refuge and then, just before turning back, we saw two dolphins for five or ten minutes. We could not get a good photo of them, though.

We were then treated to lunch and an afternoon at the Florida Aquarium, which we highly recommend. The aquarium recreates several environments: an underground spring, a mangrove shore, a beach, and a coral reef. It’s almost as if you are really experiencing these. The otters were very playful that afternoon and especially fun to watch.

Sus made a slide show so you can join us on our adventure.
