Vero Beach

seafood restaurant in Vero Beach, Florida

The Ocean Grill in Vero Beach, Florida

I definitely want to go back to Vero Beach!

We arranged to meet friends at The Ocean Grill in Vero Beach, Florida, for dinner three weeks ago. (It’s less than two hours down the turnpike from Orlando and then you take route 60 from Yeehaw Junction until it dead ends at the restaurant.) The Ocean Grill has very tasty food (pricey, though) and a fun, eclectic interior. It was full very soon after it opened at 5:30. I’d put in a reservation for the restaurant and be prepared to pay $22/dinner, but there’s a few lower-priced items or even a tasty soup and appetizer. I had Chicken Oscar. Their lunch menu is definitely cheaper (under $10.)

I felt like we were in “another country” just because Vero Beach was so different from Orlando. You could park near the restaurant and do shops and walk the beach. There’s plenty of beach access points along A1A north and south of Vero Beach. Disney has a resort north of the restaurant on A1A.

We arrived in Vero Beach well before dinner, so we stopped at the McLarty Treasure Museum. It takes less than an hour to do this museum and only costs a few dollars. It was fascinating to learn about 1,500 survivors stranded here when a fleet of Spanish treasure ships sank off the coast in 1715.

Pelican Island NWR

Pelican Island NWR

We only had a half hour to stop at Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge. This refuge was America’s first National Wildlife Refuge. President Theodore Roosevelt signed an executive order to set aside this land for wildlife in 1903. (Read more…)

I can’t guarantee you would see dolphins, but if you want to try, go straight in past the first parking lot in the Refuge and then turn at the next right into the Centennial area. It’s an easy walk to the observation tower overlooking the Indian River. We saw a pod of dolphins feeding in the river.

After dinner, we drove past a large home with lots of Christmas lights in a huge front yard off of route 60 not far from the restaurant. If you’re in Vero Beach in December, read this article first and then this article to learn more. Apparently you can drive around the outside of this large home, at least, to see hundreds of thousands of Christmas lights. (Maybe we should have stopped.) They also have special times to see the twenty decorated rooms as well.

Here’s a good list of things to do in and near Vero Beach; most of the things in the second half of the list “within an hour” are south of Vero Beach.

NOTES:

Moving Josh to Aiken

We had a great four-day trip to help Josh settle in for his first job after college.

The movers picked up his things on Thursday, August 26th. We drove about eight hours on Friday to South Carolina and shopped for some things Saturday. The movers arrived at 8 PM on Saturday. Twenty-four hours later, we had assembled the IKEA furniture Josh had purchased in Orlando and had most everything unpacked. So, we just had enough time to do everything we thought of to help him. (The photo is of Mike and Josh celebrating with some root beer floats on Sunday night, using Josh’s new table.)

As we were driving back home on Monday, we were near St. Augustine around dinner time and decided to stop. So, we walked around the town a bit and ate delicious fajitas at Acapulco Mexican restaurant overlooking the harbor and the Castillo de San Marcos. It’s always a treat to stroll around St. Augustine!

Thank you for praying for Josh’s new job and for a safe move. We could see God’s hand behind many of the details in getting a job, finding an apartment, and moving.

The Memorial Day Weekend Mashup: Part 1

We had a busy Memorial Day weekend. Ben flew in from Washington with his girlfriend, Bonnie, so we could meet her… and so he could introduce her to Central Florida in one long weekend!

On Friday, we went to Sea World and found out Bonnie had never been before and had never been to an aquarium or on a roller coaster or on a flume ride, so we took care of that. We made sure to take her to our favorites: the Kraken rollercoaster, Journey to Atlantis, Wild Arctic, Jewel of the Sea Aquarium, Stingray Lagoon, Dolphin Cove, Penguin Encounter, Shark Encounter, Manta Aquarium, Pacific Point Preserve, and the Blue Horizons show. We didn’t know the park was closing early, otherwise, I’m sure Ben and Josh would have taken Bonnie on the Manta rollercoaster and we would have taken her to A’Lure, an acrobatic show. We had a barbecue dinner at the Voyager’s Smokehouse.

On Saturday, Ben, Josh, Jenn, and Bonnie went to Gainesville, Florida. She was able to meet some of Ben’s good friends and they took her around the University of Florida campus. For dinner they went to a very unique pizza place, Satchel’s. (I explained more about Satchel’s in a January 2008 post.)

Sunday, we went to church and then stayed around home for a yummy dinner and belated birthday party for Ben. He turned 25 this year! He loves to make cakes, so he actually made his own birthday cake, a Black Forest Cake.

See tomorrow’s post for news about the rest of our big weekend, a video of barnacles, and a link to a photo slideshow about our weekend visiting St. Augustine, the beach nearby, and Campus Crusade for Christ headquarters. Looking for Dolphins

We were treated to an ecotour yesterday. The guide for the Wild Dolphin Ecotour explained a lot about the ecology and industry surrounding Tampa Bay. We stopped briefly at a wildlife refuge and then, just before turning back, we saw two dolphins for five or ten minutes. We could not get a good photo of them, though.

We were then treated to lunch and an afternoon at the Florida Aquarium, which we highly recommend. The aquarium recreates several environments: an underground spring, a mangrove shore, a beach, and a coral reef. It’s almost as if you are really experiencing these. The otters were very playful that afternoon and especially fun to watch.

Sus made a slide show so you can join us on our adventure.

Washington Oaks Gardens State Park

Washington Oaks Gardens State Park

I don’t remember what year we discovered this Florida state park, but I thought I would recommend it today.

Washington Oaks Gardens State Park is midway between St. Augustine and Daytona Beach on A1A.  You see from the photo the beach isn’t a typical lay-in-the-sun beach, but more appealing to an eco-tourist.

What you may enjoy at the park:

  • Tidal pools on the beach
  • Coastal scrub and hammock for birding
  • Fishing
  • Biking
  • Hiking
  • Reenactors
  • And a beautiful formal gardens

The park is also popular for weddings and receptions.

Visit their site for more info and for pictures. We know you’ll love this park!
