Festivals of Speed

We like to post tips so you know about different things to do in your travels. Recently, we discovered Festivals of Speed, which is held in four different locations in Florida. We learned about it through an offer to get in for half price with a Living Social coupon.

We drove up to the quiet town of Howey-in-the-Hills, where dozens of “exotic cars” were on display on the beautiful Mission Inn’s golf course. (We never did see Howey.)

In addition to the “exotic cars” we saw boats, classic cars, and sports cars.  The most expensive vehicle on the property? An $800,000 motor home.  (Personally, I’d rather people spent that kind of money on missions or something instead of on themselves).

In this photo, we’re posing with a Mosler, which is a Florida-made car that we hadn’t heard of before.  We even saw a humble, little VW bug!  It seemed out-of-place.

If you like cars, and you’re in Florida at the right time, we can recommend Festivals of Speed.

Jenn’s about Ready to Start Classes

As you know, Jenn’s in Germany.  The semesters are different than in the States, so she’ll be taking classes (in German) starting Monday and through July.  We’re waiting to hear what classes she’ll be taking. I’m sure she’ll appreciate your prayers for her to be safe and healthy and to do well in her studies.

She had a wonderful few weeks as an intern at The Art Factory in Kandern, Germany.  She made some new friends, hiked, and made a trip into Basel, Switzerland.  She’s now in Freiburg, Germany, which is a university town in the Black Forest region.  Many universities are located there.  Again, she’s hiking and making new friends.  They’re all hoping to make some weekend trips together.

Her past two weeks, she’s been busy with registration and orientation for the international students.  This picture is from a recent hike (with Jenn in the center, and her two fellow students from Stetson, and some of their new friends from Canada and Serbia).

I’ll write about her time in Germany once in a while, but you can follow her new blog directly; she’s sharing photos and stories regularly at the brightest and the darkest.  Jenn’s already written some great posts, like her adventures this past weekend, including Easter Mass in the cathedral, which you’ll enjoy reading about. In the upper right corner of Jenn’s blog, you can subscribe with your email address to receive a notice when she writes something new.  She’d love to have you join her travels.

NOTES (March 2013):

  • Jenn plans to continue blogging after she finishes her senior year in two months.
  • Jenn is on the far right in a group photo in a Stetson Today online news article, Summer Freiburg Program Rewarding. She joined the summer students from Stetson on some of their field trips while she was doing her semester abroad in Freiburg, Germany.

A Baby Shower Trip

Josh, Jenn, and I visited Ben and Bonnie in DC for Little Schmitt’s baby shower. We decided not to stop overnight, so on March 1st and on March 6th we drove the whole way from 7 am to 10 pm.  (It wasn’t that bad.  I’d do it again.)

The baby shower was fun with many of Bonnie’s friends attending and her mom and sister, too.  The food and decorations followed a Peter Rabbit theme.  You can see some pictures in my Facebook photo album from our trip.

We took three short trips while we were in town.  We  visited the National Cathedral one afternoon; this photo was taken in the foyer before our planned stop at Nielsen’s Frozen Custard in Vienna,Virginia (even with cold temperatures and a light snow flurry).

Jenn wanted to visit the National Museum of the American Indian, especially to see an exhibit on horses and Indian culture.  We then crossed the mall to the National Gallery of Art and were really impressed! We saw original works by VanGogh, DaVinci, Rembrandt, Gaugin, Picasso, and more.

On our third trip, we went back for more of the National Gallery of Art and also visited the Renwick Gallery, too, which had an exhibit of  decorative arts from the White House.

Mike needed to stay in Orlando because of the one-month-long system test and missed joining us for this family trip. You can see all the fun photos of the baby shower and our sightseeing activity as if you were able to come, too.

Christmas with the Family 2011

We had a very full visit with all the family together for Christmas.  I uploaded about two dozen photos from our Christmas vacation into a Facebook photo album.  You can look at the pictures even if you don’t have a Facebook account.

I hope I can find time to write about some of the details of what we did, but for now, feel free to just enjoy the pictures and captions in the Facebook “photo album”.

A Visit to DeLeon Springs State Park

We went to visit Jenn at Stetson University recently.

We picked her up and headed over to one of our favorite places, DeLeon Springs State Park, which is not very far from Stetson (or DeLand, Florida).

The Old Spanish Sugar Mill restaurant is in the park (so you’ll need to pay park admission if you go).  We ate in the mill and made our pancakes at our table.  (See a 2006 photo of Mike making pancakes at the restaurant).  It’s a fun place for breakfast!

A lot of people were enjoying a beautiful day at the park.  Besides the usual swimming, boating, and hiking,  we saw cave divers who had just finished scuba diving in the spring.

Before our hike, we looked through the small visitor center and chatted with ladies who were demonstrating crafts that morning.  In learning about the park’s history, we chuckled at a short video of Queenie, the water-skiing elephant who performed at DeLeon Springs in the 50’s when it was a private park.  In writing this post, I learned that Queenie just died on June 3rd.

On one of our visits to the park about two years ago, we took the 50-minute eco/history boat tour which follows the water from the spring as it flows into Lake Woodruff.

MORE PHOTOS: I made a short slide show of our visit to DeLeon Springs with pictures of our hike.
