Jenn’s Adventure Begins and You Can Follow Along

We’ve enjoyed having Jenn with us since early December.   I especially enjoyed it when all three of us would ride to work together.  (She was employed full-time in the Specialized Donations office.)  We took this picture on a beautiful, windy day in the quad at Campus Crusade for Christ World Headquarters.

So, why wasn’t she at school?  She will be in April… in Germany!  The semesters are different there, so she’ll be taking classes (in German) from early April through July.  I’m sure she’ll appreciate your prayers for her to be safe and healthy and to do well in her studies.  She’ll return just two weeks before she begins her senior year at Stetson University.

She actually boarded a plane last night and should be landing at the Basel airport within the hour. She’ll email us sometime later today that she arrived safely.

I’ll write about her time in Germany once in a while, but you can follow her new blog directly.  She’ll be sharing photos and stories regularly at the brightest and the darkest.  Jenn’s already written some great posts about getting ready to go, including our trip to D.C. for Ben and Bonnie’s baby shower. (Here’s my photos from the trip.)  In the upper right corner of Jenn’s blog, you can subscribe with your email address to receive a notice when she writes something new.  As it happened, her camera broke just a few days ago, so we helped her pick out a new one.  She’s all set to take some great travel photos and give you a peek into studying abroad.  She’d love to have you join her travels.

Jenn actually left early to intern at The Art Factory in Kandern, Germany.  We’ll write more about this ministry in the next few weeks.  Jenn will be studying at the Pädagogische Hochschule in Freiburg, Germany, which is in the Black Forest region.

A Visit to DeLeon Springs State Park

We went to visit Jenn at Stetson University recently.

We picked her up and headed over to one of our favorite places, DeLeon Springs State Park, which is not very far from Stetson (or DeLand, Florida).

The Old Spanish Sugar Mill restaurant is in the park (so you’ll need to pay park admission if you go).  We ate in the mill and made our pancakes at our table.  (See a 2006 photo of Mike making pancakes at the restaurant).  It’s a fun place for breakfast!

A lot of people were enjoying a beautiful day at the park.  Besides the usual swimming, boating, and hiking,  we saw cave divers who had just finished scuba diving in the spring.

Before our hike, we looked through the small visitor center and chatted with ladies who were demonstrating crafts that morning.  In learning about the park’s history, we chuckled at a short video of Queenie, the water-skiing elephant who performed at DeLeon Springs in the 50’s when it was a private park.  In writing this post, I learned that Queenie just died on June 3rd.

On one of our visits to the park about two years ago, we took the 50-minute eco/history boat tour which follows the water from the spring as it flows into Lake Woodruff.

MORE PHOTOS: I made a short slide show of our visit to DeLeon Springs with pictures of our hike.

Out to the Ball Game

Mike especially had a great night out last Friday.  Jenn and I did, too, of course, but what a Daddy night!

First, we were visiting Jenn.  She shared with us the great news that she’s been awarded the Sullivan creative writing scholarship for her next two years at Stetson because of the full-length screenplay she’s been writing for one of her classes.

Then, we went to Casey’s on the Corner for hot dogs before the Hatters baseball game.  Mike loved the baseball-themed restaurant and kept remarking about it.

As we sat down for our chili dogs, Jenn and I presented him with a Stetson baseball tee shirt which he put on for the game.

We’d never gone to a ball game together and it had been some time since Mike had been to a game, so we were all looking forward to going.  The Hatters are nationally ranked and their head coach, Pete Dunn is 8th in career victories for active Division I coaches.  Also, in 31 years 71 of his players have gone on to professional teams.

The Hatters played well, winning 6 to 3.  Mike kept a running dialogue for Jenn so she could understand and appreciate what was happening.

We topped off our evening with homemade ice cream in waffle cones at the Sweet Spot to celebrate the Hatters’ victory and Jenn’s new scholarship.

We recommend Hatters baseball if you want an affordable and fun baseball game while visiting Orlando.

Looking in the window of an old barber shop

DeLand, Florida, is just an hour or less from Orlando or twenty minutes from Daytona Beach and offers a variety of things to do.  Now that Jenn goes to school in DeLand, we’ve been in the area more and have made some great discoveries.  If you’re a tourist visiting Disney or the other attractions, maybe you would find something to break the “tourist mold” on your way to Daytona Beach. There’s something for everyone!  (See the bottom of this post for a link to restaurants, for a blog with updates on events in DeLand and for the Stetson University calendar of events.)

What we recommend personally:

We haven’t made it here, but hope to:

We’ll not try this!

  • Cave diving in some of the local springs
