Brunch with the Bongos

No, we really didn’t eat with the Bongos. We took Josh to Boma, a restaurant in Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, for brunch. We had been to Boma for the dinner buffet once, but prefer the brunch buffet, which we’ve done a few times. It’s cheaper than dinner, for one, but you also have great opportunities to see the animals surrounding the lodge before and after your meal. When we asked Josh where we could go to celebrate his first engineering job, he chose Boma. The food is delicious, with something for everyone. We enjoy trying the African recipes.

A few of the animals we’ve seen in our different visits to the lodge are: Thomson’s Gazelle, Anikole Cattle, Eland, Grant’s Zebra, Bongo, Reticulated Giraffe, Ostrich, and East African Crowned Crane (nesting on three eggs!) . . . just to name a few. Read more about the animals.

We also wanted to get some nice photos of Josh and Jenn, so we wandered around, enjoying the great landscaping and African architecture, and found many attractive areas for picture-taking.

The Memorial Day Weekend Mashup: Part 2

YouTube Preview Image See yesterday’s post for a photo and links for the first part of our Memorial Day weekend, including a day at Sea World and a day in Gainesville, Florida.

Monday, Memorial Day, we headed for St. Augustine. We picnicked and then walked out to the beach at Anastasia State Park. We recommend this beach if you would rather not go to one of the crowded, popular beaches along a hotel strip. We also camped here about a dozen years ago. It’s a great spot and close to all you can do in St. Augustine.

It was warm and very windy so that the waves were too strong for most of us. We took walks and Josh and Jenny made a sand castle similar to Castillo de San Marcos. Sus enjoyed looking for shells. She found quite a few razor clams and a few dollar-size green jellyfish. The big find was a stick with live Pelagic Goose Barnacles. (See the video of them feeding in our bucket, above.)

We headed over toward St. Augustine. Discovering that Bonnie had never seen a lighthouse, we stopped at the St. Augustine light station, just to walk around the grounds.

Of course, the fort was new for Bonnie, so we walked around there next. Castillo de San Marcos was going to close at 5:00, so get there before 3:00 at least, if you want to go inside.

Walking around the historic, old buildings of St. Augustine, America’s oldest city, we decided on dinner at Café Del Hildago. The Hidalgo Salad was very good, as well as the gelato for dessert. Gelato, an Italian ice cream, was new for a number of us. (We liked the white chocolate kiss, the mint, the chocolate peanut butter, and the pistachio flavors.)

We spent another hour walking around after dinner and ended our day enjoying the beautiful Spanish Renaissance architecture on the campus of Flagler College, whose centerpiece is the Ponce de León hotel, originally built as a luxury hotel in 1888. Here’s a peek inside. The college offers tours of the hotel.

Tuesday morning, Ben and Bonnie drove over to the Animal Kingdom Lodge. Ben worked in the parking lot for the Animal Kingdom for three consecutive summers during college. Bonnie was impressed with the size of the parking lot and they saw some elands and other animals around the lodge.

When they returned home, we all headed out for lunch and to see Campus Crusade headquarters. We visited all the offices where Mike, Sus, and Jenn work and the prayer center and then took the Jesus Film tour.

Sus put together a slide show with pictures from our fun-filled family mini-vacation.

The Memorial Day Weekend Mashup: Part 1

We had a busy Memorial Day weekend. Ben flew in from Washington with his girlfriend, Bonnie, so we could meet her… and so he could introduce her to Central Florida in one long weekend!

On Friday, we went to Sea World and found out Bonnie had never been before and had never been to an aquarium or on a roller coaster or on a flume ride, so we took care of that. We made sure to take her to our favorites: the Kraken rollercoaster, Journey to Atlantis, Wild Arctic, Jewel of the Sea Aquarium, Stingray Lagoon, Dolphin Cove, Penguin Encounter, Shark Encounter, Manta Aquarium, Pacific Point Preserve, and the Blue Horizons show. We didn’t know the park was closing early, otherwise, I’m sure Ben and Josh would have taken Bonnie on the Manta rollercoaster and we would have taken her to A’Lure, an acrobatic show. We had a barbecue dinner at the Voyager’s Smokehouse.

On Saturday, Ben, Josh, Jenn, and Bonnie went to Gainesville, Florida. She was able to meet some of Ben’s good friends and they took her around the University of Florida campus. For dinner they went to a very unique pizza place, Satchel’s. (I explained more about Satchel’s in a January 2008 post.)

Sunday, we went to church and then stayed around home for a yummy dinner and belated birthday party for Ben. He turned 25 this year! He loves to make cakes, so he actually made his own birthday cake, a Black Forest Cake.

See tomorrow’s post for news about the rest of our big weekend, a video of barnacles, and a link to a photo slideshow about our weekend visiting St. Augustine, the beach nearby, and Campus Crusade for Christ headquarters. Looking for Dolphins

We were treated to an ecotour yesterday. The guide for the Wild Dolphin Ecotour explained a lot about the ecology and industry surrounding Tampa Bay. We stopped briefly at a wildlife refuge and then, just before turning back, we saw two dolphins for five or ten minutes. We could not get a good photo of them, though.

We were then treated to lunch and an afternoon at the Florida Aquarium, which we highly recommend. The aquarium recreates several environments: an underground spring, a mangrove shore, a beach, and a coral reef. It’s almost as if you are really experiencing these. The otters were very playful that afternoon and especially fun to watch.

Sus made a slide show so you can join us on our adventure.

Busch Gardens in Tampa

Mike and Sus had an opportunity to go to Busch Gardens for a day. We wanted to see their Christmas shows and their decorations. We were not disappointed.

We enjoyed a very good Gospel-style Christmas concert and a great ice skating show. Both shows were very well done.

For dinner we also recommend the Zambia Smokehouse in Stanleyville. We were able to share a meal because of the portion sizes and the food was delicious!

At the end of the day, the lighting was fantastic… a photographer’s delight! We were really pleased with our photos and have posted several animal photos in a “Busch Gardens in Tampa” album in our family web photo album collection.
