What Does It Mean to Fulfill The Great Commission?

“And Jesus said to them, ‘All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.’” – The Great Commission, Matthew 28: 18-20 (ESV)

Throughout our 45+ years with Cru, we’ve been blessed by the godly men and women on our staff. We’d like to introduce you to one.

Dela Adadevoh on Cru’s Calling

Dela Adadevoh is from Ghana. He joined Campus Crusade for Christ in 1980. He began his ministry in Nigeria. After serving in several areas of leadership in Africa, he was called to be our Vice President of Global Leadership. (Listen to his decision to join Cru at bit.ly/DelaCalling.)

Dela Adadevoh

Recently, Dela reminded Cru’s missionaries about our calling:

“Calling has to do with our reason for existence. Two things we cannot change as an organization are our Statement of Faith and our calling. We may change some wording of our calling, but we cannot change the substance of it. We have to remain faithful to our calling at all times.

“Our calling is to help fulfill the Great Commission by winning, building, and sending in the power of the Holy Spirit, and helping the body of Christ do evangelism and discipleship.

“The fulfillment of the Great Commission is different from participation in the Great Commission. God has not called us to be a huge organization or to establish a ministry presence in all countries. We may be both of these and more, but only because they are necessary to complete the Great Commission. Our calling has to do with the completion of the Great Commission . . .

“The Great Commission can only be fulfilled in our generation if all of God’s people use all of God’s resources to reach all of God’s world.”

Fulfilling the Great Commission

So, what does it mean to fulfill the Great Commission? It means every person will have had a clear presentation of the Gospel. It means life-changing evangelism and discipleship are occurring globally. It means we’ll see spiritual movements in every nation, so people of every tongue and tribe will stand before God’s throne.

Since 1951, Cru has sought to win, build, and send Christ-centered multiplying disciples who will launch spiritual movements. We now have a ministry presence in 191 countries. From the beginning, we always looked for national staff and leadership for each country. Dela is an excellent example of this.

Cru’s ministries have gone beyond college campuses to build movements globally through the JESUS Film project, in the military, urban centers, families, and more. You are part of this movement through your prayers and finances. One great day, God will reveal what you and we have done together to bring the nations into His Kingdom.
