Boxes of Love

Here’s Life Inner City is the compassionate urban ministry of Campus Crusade for Christ. HLIC has ministries in fifteen U.S. cities, one of which is Orlando. Our good friends, Chris and Karen, head the Here’s Life Inner City ministry in Orlando and asked for help to put food in boxes. So, Mike and Jenny helped assemble Boxes of Love this weekend. These boxes are delivered to needy families by local churches working with the HLIC ministry. God has used these gifts of food to reach people and show them the love of Christ. On the HLIC donation site, you can … Continue reading Boxes of Love

Majoring in Tattoos

I thanked Matt for being considerate when he asked earlier if I had enough room when I squeezed into the middle seat. “Are you a student?” I asked. “No, I’ve just been bummin’ around,” Matt explained. “I want to go to University of Texas, though.” “What would you major in?” “Graphic art.” “What would you like to do with that?” I inquired. “Tattoos,” Matt answered as he rolled up his sleeve. His left forearm was covered. “I designed this myself.” We talked more about his plans and what he was doing now. He naturally asked about me and I explained … Continue reading Majoring in Tattoos

In a Corner

We walked past seat after seat, looking for two together. Finally, we saw two seats in the very last row. A rail-thin teenager had the window seat. I could not see much of him as he huddled in his back corner of the plane, his hoodie pulled up, hiding his face. I noticed his tattooed ankle as I stowed my carry-on and tried to get comfortable. “Do you have enough room?” he asked. “Thank you,” I replied as I looked up into his face, hidden behind a curtain of hair. I learned his name was Matt and we settled in … Continue reading In a Corner

Cruisin’ at 30

We just had a GREAT weekend! First, Ben and Josh came to celebrate Josh’s twentieth birthday, so we had a fun party and lots of good food. Also, we spent a day with Sus’ sister, Karen, and her husband, Cal, and had more good food! Cal and Karen went on a cruise to celebrate their thirtieth wedding anniversary and spent some time with us before and after the trip. We had not been together for six years and we thoroughly enjoyed their visit. We are also celebrating because Karen is a cancer survivor! Thanks to all of you who prayed … Continue reading Cruisin’ at 30

The Free Meal

She was standing off to the side, her blue-gloved hand resting on a trash bin. I would be passing by her, so I pulled The Passage from my purse and walked toward her. “Thank you for keeping the restroom clean,” I smiled as I handed her the tract. “What is this?” she asked in a heavy island accent. “This is about Jesus.” “What church are you from?” she wanted to know. However, I didn’t want to answer her directly. I avoid naming denominations or even using “Christian” since a person’s definitions of these words are probably different than mine and … Continue reading The Free Meal

Red Sox

When I learned my cousin was deployed to Baghdad, I placed an order for some sports DVDs from Athletes in Action, Campus Crusade for Christ’s sports ministry. I told some friends who love baseball about the DVDs and sent them the baseball one, Reversing the Curse, with stories from the Red Sox during their comeback in the 2004 season when they won the World Series. A week later, our friends, John and Karen, wrote us: “The DVD arrived today and we just finished watching it. It was GREAT! Thanks soooo much. “At the end, [the DVD] told us how to … Continue reading Red Sox
