Gatorland revisited

We had a nice, leisurely day at Gatorland last Saturday. Sus is an avid birdwatcher so she especially enjoyed seeing the rookery. We watched egrets build nests and saw an egg in one nest and an adult feeding a hatchling in another one! We also saw four spoonbills nesting. The late sun over the lagoon made for good photography. Gatorland is offering a Florida resident special through February, so the park was crowded, but crowds were thinnest either early in the day or late. In fact, the park stayed open past closing and a lot of the crowds had gone. … Continue reading Gatorland revisited

Prince Caspian

Jenny was looking forward for more than a year to the release of the next Narnia movie, Prince Caspian. We made sure we saw the movie on opening weekend. After that, we had some Disney passes, which were going to expire, from when Ben and Josh used to work at Walt Disney World. So, we enjoyed a day together as a family at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Almost first thing,we were delighted to find a Prince Caspian character actor. Of course, we had to stop for an autograph and picture. Jenny was on Cloud Nine all day. We were also able … Continue reading Prince Caspian

A Visit to FSU and More

Mike, Sus, and Jenny drove to Tallahassee so Jenny could check out FSU, since it is one of the top schools for studying creative writing. FSU is currently her top university choice after high school graduation. We took a tour and talked with some professors, then we went to visit Ben. The next day, Ben gave us a tour of the physics department and showed us the laboratory classroom where he teaches. (Jenny is pretending to be one of his students in the photo.) We also walked around campus a bit before heading back home. We stopped in Gainesville and … Continue reading A Visit to FSU and More

Saint Augustine

Sus joined Jenny and a bus load of students for a history field trip to Saint Augustine. The weather was beautiful and we had a great time visiting some of the historic sites and museums. We saw carpentry and smithing demonstrations in the Spanish Quarter, then headed to the museum in the Government House. A trip to Saint Augustine is not complete without a visit to Castillo de San Marcos. We even saw a cannon-firing demonstration. (If you like forts, we also recommend a short drive south to Fort Matanzas, which also protected Saint Augustine.) In this photo are Klare, … Continue reading Saint Augustine

Our Annual Beach Trip

For about fifteen years, we have gone to Cocoa Beach every winter for a family weekend. The boys were visiting for Spring Break so we were still able to all go. I’ve put together some photos from over the years. If you are going to be visiting Kennedy Space Center or vacationing on the Space Coast, we can recommend some of the different things we have done in the area.
