Jury Duty and the Truth

Kathy arrived at the courthouse with two books and a bunch of snacks, expecting to sit in the jury pool all day. No one wants a missionary as a juror, you know. At least that’s what all her friends told her. Within the first ten minutes of sitting in the potential jurors’ holding room, four cases were called up and about 100 people were needed, including Kathy. Kathy was intimidated sitting in front of the judge, the attorneys, and the defendant for voir dire, where the attorneys ask questions to determine the six jurors for the case. Some of their … Continue reading Jury Duty and the Truth

A Shot in the Dark

I was already awake at 3 AM, but this was not that unusual. It was only the second night and the hotel bed and I were still getting acquainted. As I tried laying on one side and then the other, two muffled gunshots turned the night on like a key in an ignition. The once still night air was now filled with loud voices. I got up to peer through the curtains. Just fifty yards from the hotel, a Waffle House parking lot was swarming with people, talking loudly. Most were in two large groups and more were inside the … Continue reading A Shot in the Dark

I placed ten packages on the counter. Mike, the postal clerk, would be helping me for a while to get all my gifts weighed, stamped, and on their way. I tried a little friendly chatter, but he pretty much focused on his job. After seven packages and just as many dead-end comments, Mike started handling the last three packages. I wanted these gifts insured. As I watched Mike slap a UPC sticker on the first package, I commented, “Where would we be without bar codes?” For some reason, this statement clicked with him and we got into a brief conversation … Continue reading Unresponsive?

The Spirit-Filled Life, Part Two

Just one week later, Beverly was radiant. I approached her after the church service. “How was your week?” I asked. “God was so good,” she replied. She had asked God to resolve a long-standing accounting problem at work and it cleared up that day. By Friday, when she normally would deal with the week’s stresses by having dinner and cocktails with friends, she ordered ice tea. “What did your husband think? “It’s funny,” Beverly explained, “but it’s not my husband that encourages my having a few cocktails. It’s me. He hasn’t had a drink in fifteen years! He’s actually said … Continue reading The Spirit-Filled Life, Part Two

The Spirit-Filled Life

“I’m afraid I will not stay committed,” Beverly confided in me. “I have turned my back on God for thirty years.” “It is impossible for you to keep from falling back into sinful habits,” I explained, “but not for Jesus. He is the one who will be giving you the power you will need.” I pulled out a tract on How to be filled with the Holy Spirit and we started reading through it together. We could hear the church service finishing up through the closed door and I asked her if she was concerned for her purse that she … Continue reading The Spirit-Filled Life

God Makes the Connections

“Hello. Who’s there? Who is this?” No one spoke when one of our Eastern European staff members answered his phone, but he heard breathing. Since the other person did not say anything, he hung up. Later, the phone rang two more times. On the third time, a timid voice said, “This is Helena. I’m seventeen years old. I’ve been asking God to help me. I want to know more about God. I decided to call the number that was in my mind and see if God will answer me and help me.” Then Helena invited Christ into her life over … Continue reading God Makes the Connections
