MP3 and Me

“There she is again,” I thought. Almost every time I went to the fitness center, I saw a tall, Middle Eastern young woman. I had never talked to her and I was feeling awkward as the weeks turned to months. It seemed that she was a little awkward about seeing me, too. Normally, I strike up conversations early. The longer the time goes from initial encounter to introduction, the harder I find it to introduce myself. During this time, I had also been given a MP3 player, so I was listening to music or audio books when I could have … Continue reading MP3 and Me

I recognized her face and we made eye contact, but Polly’s expression seemed to have “closed door” written all over it. We chatted a bit about my groceries and I discovered she was also lactose intolerant. Polly opened up as we talked about what we can and cannot eat. “You had better be careful about your bones!” I exclaimed when I learned how little dietary calcium she could eat. “Don’t worry,” Polly replied, “I have a lot of doctors watching me.” After presenting my credit card, I handed her a tract. Polly beamed as she accepted it. “Oh, good! I … Continue reading The Collection

God Opens a Door “Excuse me.” We stopped, as two young Asian men approached us on the sidewalk. We had just left a meeting in a large college stadium with over 5,000 people and had crossed the street with many others from the conference for an outdoor ice cream social. “What is going on?” the students asked. We explained that we were on the staff of Cru and were attending a National Staff conference on their campus for the entire week. These two students were from China and were studying over the summer. We were able to talk with them for … Continue reading Share Your Faith at Christian Events

The Eternal Value of Seven Dollars

The early morning air was still cool, just right for a walk… before the scorching Florida sun would discourage me from venturing out later. No one else was out when I spotted three folded green bills lying near the sidewalk. Picking up a soggy seven dollars, I wondered if someone had lost them the night before. I noticed I was exactly halfway between two houses. Did one of these people lose the money or was it someone last night or that morning out for a jog or a walk? It was too early to knock on their doors, so I … Continue reading The Eternal Value of Seven Dollars

Up in the Air

Sometimes it might be difficult to get a conversation going. You’ve been there, I’m sure. Perhaps you’re seated next to someone for a transcontinental flight, like I was last month. After repeated attempts, I just could not get into a spiritual subject with Shelly. “Are you interested in spiritual things?” I finally just asked her, like stepping out into mid-air. We went through the “Would You Like to Know God Personally” booklet even though she indicated she was a Christian. Again, I was not very confident of her spiritual foundation, so I felt I must present the Gospel and not … Continue reading Up in the Air
