The Knock at the Door

A lanky teen, dressed in black, waited at our door with a group of his friends. After we chatted with him, we barely sat long before we had to pop up again and answer the doorbell. A sweet little girl stood at the door, her hair in pigtails, asking if we could give her something for free. Yes, it is “Trick or Treat” time again. We consider it a perfect time to hand out tracts with our candy. (It’s gotta be chocolate if they are going to remember YOUR house!) What an opportunity to offer the free gift of salvation … Continue reading The Knock at the Door

Heaven

“As human beings, we have a terminal disease called mortality. The current death rate is 100 percent. Unless Christ returns soon, we’re all going to die. We don’t like to think about death; yet, worldwide, 3 people die every second, 180 every minute and nearly 11,000 every hour. If the Bible is right about what happens to us after death, it means that more than 250,000 people every day go either to Heaven or Hell.” ~~~~~~~ This excerpt is from Heaven by David Alcorn (pp. xx – xxi). I actually prefer his shorter work, In Light of Eternity. I haven’t … Continue reading Heaven

The Battle Zone

I could hear my husband talking to someone in the garage. The other man was distinctly British. “Is your computer on, Honey?” Mike asked as he opened the laundry room door. “Yes, it is,” I said, my hands greasy from de-boning a chicken. I sat at the table, our kitchen only half-cleaned-up from dinner as a pleasant sixty-something Brit stepped into our kitchen. The men marched into our paper-strewn family room. I had battled for several intense days planning a trip. I joined them in the war zone as we circled the computer, my hands almost dripping with grease. I … Continue reading The Battle Zone

“I Don’t Understand”

Bonnie Witherall opened the door to the Sidon clinic in South Lebanon. Five shots rang out from the religious extremist’s gun and she joined the ranks of martyrs in the throne room of God. Bonnie had ministered to Palestinian refugee women in Sidon. After her death, many other missionaries were kicked out of the country or asked to leave, and the local believers were living in fear. They did not reopen the clinic and did not reach out to their Muslim neighbors. So this modest building in the heart of Hezbollah territory, once full of life with outreach to kids, … Continue reading “I Don’t Understand”

The Turning Point

“Stupid idiot!” I exclaimed. As I was ready to go through the intersection near Central City Mall, a car had made a dangerous and illegal turn in front of me. Immediately, James 3: 9 – 10 came into my mind. “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness. Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be.” I was more shaken by that little word from God than from the near miss! I vividly remember that moment to this day. … Continue reading The Turning Point

Fishing… and catching!

For a week, I had been analyzing my efforts as a “fisher of men.” On Monday, I had gone out without my “bait” (tracts). I was frustrated that I did not have any with me for several people I chatted with as I shopped. On Tuesday, I restocked my purse because I knew I had some errands to run. I did not give a tract to everyone I could have (or maybe even SHOULD have), but in the next two days I handed out at least eight tracts! It’s amazing how many little conversations can come up! I’ll save that … Continue reading Fishing… and catching!
