Up in the Air

Sometimes it might be difficult to get a conversation going. You’ve been there, I’m sure. Perhaps you’re seated next to someone for a transcontinental flight, like I was last month. After repeated attempts, I just could not get into a spiritual subject with Shelly. “Are you interested in spiritual things?” I finally just asked her, like stepping out into mid-air. We went through the “Would You Like to Know God Personally” booklet even though she indicated she was a Christian. Again, I was not very confident of her spiritual foundation, so I felt I must present the Gospel and not … Continue reading Up in the Air

Jenny finishes a busy year

In addition to challenging course work with the International Baccalaureate program, Jenny had a supporting role in a school play, It’s A Wonderful Life. Jenny also entered a Shakespearean oratory contest, earning third place. She was inducted into both the Thespian (theater) Honor Society. During her induction week, she had to dress in a different role every day for school. In this picture she is dressed in a toga for a Shakespeare theme. As we reported earlier, she was inducted into the German Honor Society and was also recognized for being in the 95th percentile of a national German exam. … Continue reading Jenny finishes a busy year

The Seed of the Church

Three Men Martyred in Turkey The details were grisly and shocking. The brutal murder of three Christians has the attention of many people in Turkey and around the world. Susanne, the wife of the German missionary, told reporters, “Oh, God forgive them, for they know not what they do,” quoting Jesus’ words on the Cross. Her words are powerful in a world where revenge is the norm. Martyrs: The Seed of the Church We do not know at this time what the impact of the murders and of her forgiveness will have on Turkey. Throughout the centuries, wherever martyrdom occurs, … Continue reading The Seed of the Church

In Light of Eternity

“Mark was walking home from school one day when the boy ahead of him tripped and dropped his books, two sweaters, a baseball glove, and other odds and ends. Mark knelt down and helped the boy pick up the scattered items. Since they were going the same way, he helped carry some of the stuff. “As they walked Mark discovered the boy’s name was Bill, that he loved baseball and history, that he was having trouble with his other subjects, and that his girlfriend had just broken up with him. “They arrived at Bill’s house and spent the afternoon in … Continue reading In Light of Eternity

Prayer “Only”?

Eduardo and Luz barely speak English. Eduardo can communicate enough to understand the basics, but Luz relies on her native Spanish. I prayed for them this morning. We have been neighbors for more than a decade, and unlike our other neighbors, we have had very little contact with them. (I made one BIG contact with them when I backed into their car a few years ago!) Hopefully, our limited interactions have left a good impression (and despite the impression I made on their car!) I thought this morning that prayer is not enough, but right away I remembered that prayer … Continue reading Prayer “Only”?

You Need Prayer

“Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.” ~ Ephesians 6: 19 – 20 (NIV) Is someone praying regularly for you to be fearless in presenting the Gospel to the people around you? I used to have a homemade post card with this verse on the bottom. When I dropped a note to someone that I was praying for them, this passage from … Continue reading You Need Prayer
