The New Friend

“This is for you,” I said as I handed Elizabeth a Spanish Four Laws. I was researching a deposit with our bank’s head teller and had noticed her cross necklace and the large fish symbol on her key chain. “Thank you,” she said, as she glanced into the booklet “What would you say if you were at the gates of Heaven and God asked you why He should let you in?” I queried. I can’t remember her answer exactly, but as with most Catholics, I then explained about the thief on the cross who could not do any good works … Continue reading The New Friend

Marco, continued

“I pray but I don’t need to go to church…” Marco began to defend himself for not attending Mass. I briefly mentioned the importance of being with other believers, but decided to ask instead, “Do you read the Bible?” “No,” he admitted. “What kind of relationship would you have with your son if you did not talk to each other?” I asked. “You talk to God through prayer and He CAN talk to you through prayer, too, but He mainly speaks to us through the Bible.” I followed Marco around as he treated our home for insects. We talked about … Continue reading Marco, continued

The Battle Zone

I could hear my husband talking to someone in the garage. The other man was distinctly British. “Is your computer on, Honey?” Mike asked as he opened the laundry room door. “Yes, it is,” I said, my hands greasy from de-boning a chicken. I sat at the table, our kitchen only half-cleaned-up from dinner as a pleasant sixty-something Brit stepped into our kitchen. The men marched into our paper-strewn family room. I had battled for several intense days planning a trip. I joined them in the war zone as we circled the computer, my hands almost dripping with grease. I … Continue reading The Battle Zone

You Need Prayer

“Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should.” ~ Ephesians 6: 19 – 20 (NIV) Is someone praying regularly for you to be fearless in presenting the Gospel to the people around you? I used to have a homemade post card with this verse on the bottom. When I dropped a note to someone that I was praying for them, this passage from … Continue reading You Need Prayer

Martha? Or Mary?

“I don’t care what the Bible says,” Elma stated. I was a little taken aback by this statement and several others she made. I had put together a handful of verses for her, but she was obviously not going to be interested! She then told me a lot of her life story, mixed with tears. She had lost her husband thirty years ago and two of her children had died young. I decided afterward that I had prepared to talk to a “Martha,” but Elma was a “Mary.” One of God’s lessons for me this year comes from a message … Continue reading Martha? Or Mary?

The Grand Prize Winner!

Mike used to say he never wins anything, but this month he won the Grand Prize from our radio station. We all had front row seats at a Christian concert. We also were taken backstage to meet the artists and received their CDs. I am actually writing this in 2008 because we noticed our photo is still on the radio’s web site. Scroll all the way to the end of the photos and we are in the second to the last photo with Steven Curtis Chapman. We thought we would not be going to the concert because it was expensive … Continue reading The Grand Prize Winner!
