Freedom

I felt lighter… and not just because I had just tossed a boxful of unread magazines into the dumpster! For a long time I felt obligated that I must read those magazines. I finally realized it was not going to happen and decided to just toss them out! I definitely had a sense of freedom now that I did not have to find the time in my life or the space in my home for those magazines. Since then, I have donated old educational magazines to schools, which were very glad to get them. (Nursing homes or other places may … Continue reading Freedom

The Seed of the Church

Three Men Martyred in Turkey The details were grisly and shocking. The brutal murder of three Christians has the attention of many people in Turkey and around the world. Susanne, the wife of the German missionary, told reporters, “Oh, God forgive them, for they know not what they do,” quoting Jesus’ words on the Cross. Her words are powerful in a world where revenge is the norm. Martyrs: The Seed of the Church We do not know at this time what the impact of the murders and of her forgiveness will have on Turkey. Throughout the centuries, wherever martyrdom occurs, … Continue reading The Seed of the Church

In Light of Eternity

“Mark was walking home from school one day when the boy ahead of him tripped and dropped his books, two sweaters, a baseball glove, and other odds and ends. Mark knelt down and helped the boy pick up the scattered items. Since they were going the same way, he helped carry some of the stuff. “As they walked Mark discovered the boy’s name was Bill, that he loved baseball and history, that he was having trouble with his other subjects, and that his girlfriend had just broken up with him. “They arrived at Bill’s house and spent the afternoon in … Continue reading In Light of Eternity

The Watch

I stopped at a jewelry counter and asked for a watch battery. Sarah’s store did not carry batteries. I pulled out The Passage tract to give to her. “I’m a Christian,” she said and did something I have never had happen to me before. She asked for my name and my daughter’s name and shook our hands. I also gave Sarah the Satisfied tract on the Spirit-filled life and suggested she share The Passage tract with someone. Next, we moved down to the watch kiosk where we found Mirez; Rez for short. I had given Mirez a tract more than … Continue reading The Watch

Prayer “Only”?

Eduardo and Luz barely speak English. Eduardo can communicate enough to understand the basics, but Luz relies on her native Spanish. I prayed for them this morning. We have been neighbors for more than a decade, and unlike our other neighbors, we have had very little contact with them. (I made one BIG contact with them when I backed into their car a few years ago!) Hopefully, our limited interactions have left a good impression (and despite the impression I made on their car!) I thought this morning that prayer is not enough, but right away I remembered that prayer … Continue reading Prayer “Only”?

Reaching East and West in One Day

“Beinvenue aux Etats-Unis,” I smiled. Someone treated us to a night at EPCOT for dinner for our anniversary last year. Our waiter that night was Oliver from Paris. Unfortunately, my French is more than rusty, but I did manage to say “Welcome to the United States” (a handy little phrase I’ve used over the years.). I also wrote out and gave him some suggested destinations since he mentioned he wanted to see the USA before returning home. At the end of dinner I also handed him the French “Four Laws.” I pointed out the Paris address on the back. “This … Continue reading Reaching East and West in One Day
