God Can Use Crabs, Too!

“Look!” Andi stopped walking and stared down at the beach. “A crab!” A half-dollar-sized crab stood motionless at our feet. The waves nearby gnawed angrily at the shore, so only a few people were out on the beach. The only kids I saw on our walk were just fifty feet away. “Watch him!” I ordered as I jogged over to the group. “Come and see a crab,” I called. Soon, Andi and I were surrounded by big and little kids squealing and running away as they tried to get close to see the crab. I asked for a bucket from … Continue reading God Can Use Crabs, Too!

The Jam Session

“I’m ready,” I said, as I stood in Jane’s doorway with a bag of jars. A few weeks earlier, I had given jars of homemade strawberry freezer jam to several neighbors. Jane loved the jam so much that I offered to come over to her house and show her how easy it is to make. I brought empty jars and she had the ingredients ready. “Mmmm! This is delicious!” Jane tasted the jam on her finger and gave some to her son. We had a great time together. This year I invited her over and we made gel candles together … Continue reading The Jam Session

The New Friend

“This is for you,” I said as I handed Elizabeth a Spanish Four Laws. I was researching a deposit with our bank’s head teller and had noticed her cross necklace and the large fish symbol on her key chain. “Thank you,” she said, as she glanced into the booklet “What would you say if you were at the gates of Heaven and God asked you why He should let you in?” I queried. I can’t remember her answer exactly, but as with most Catholics, I then explained about the thief on the cross who could not do any good works … Continue reading The New Friend

Recruiting

We were very impressed by the handwritten note from a persistent Marine recruiter, Staff Sergeant G. His previous letters were ignored and now he was coming next week to our door to meet our son and try to convince him to sign up with the Marines! Well, Josh is off at college and I wanted to save this man from making an unnecessary trip, so I wrote him an e-mail. I explained that Josh would not be home and continued . . . “Thank you for your dedication and service to our great nation. We appreciate all that the armed … Continue reading Recruiting

It Doesn’t Cost Much

The little mountain of coins grew slowly. I was next in line at Big Lots. (Kind of a yard sale under a roof, if you’ve never been there.) The woman in front of me was paying for her $6.57 purchase. . . all in coins. “$1.75, $2.00, . . .,” she began counting again. Both times she was two pennies short. I could see the dilemma on her face as she searched her purse for more money. What was she going to have to leave behind in her precious purchase because she did not have enough? “Here,” I said as … Continue reading It Doesn’t Cost Much

The King’s Home

I lowered the tray of colorful Christmas cookies and suggested, “Pick one out for your Daddy, too.” Two little boys with big brown eyes reached up and picked out their favorites. “I want the castle,” said the oldest as he clutched the church-shaped cookie. “Well,” I chuckled. “that’s a church, but you could call it a home for a King.” The youngest wanted to eat his green tree cookie AND Daddy’s star, too, . . . right then. I had a few more brief visits with them and with their mother, Cathy, for several months, and then one afternoon last … Continue reading The King’s Home
