Family Celebrations… May 2013

We’re in the middle of big family events right now. Ben, Bonnie, and Patrick are here for Jenn’s graduation from Stetson. (I have a lot of photos to go through before I post our official announcement of Jenn’s big day. Stay tuned!) Also, we’re celebrating Ben and Bonnie’s second anniversary, our thirty-first anniversary, and Bonnie’s and Ben’s birthdays. Last night, we also had a mini-party for Patrick’s eleven-month birthday since we won’t be with him for his first birthday. Continue reading “Family Celebrations… May 2013”

Jenn Receives Honors

Jenn visited us last weekend and shared about a few encouraging events on campus recently…

She was invited to an honors banquet where she received the Outstanding Senior award in German and also was one of five receiving an Outstanding Senior award in English.

Several days later, Stetson students gave oral presentations of their research projects all day long for the faculty and other students to listen and learn from their studies.  (This annual event is called Stetson Showcase).  Jen’s paper, “Two Women in Conversation: a Blues Approach to May Ayim and Audre Lorde, earned second place in her category. Jenn Wins 2013 Undergraduate Tutor Award

Jenn won the prestigious 2013 Undergraduate Tutor Award at the Southeastern Writing Center Association (SWCA) conference in Ft. Lauderdale last month.

Jenn has been a tutor at the Stetson Writing Center for four years, except for her one semester studying abroad. She thoroughly loves teaching writing skills and is focusing her efforts on becoming an English professor. Continue reading “Jenn Wins 2013 Undergraduate Tutor Award”

Redeeming Online Conversations

If you checked the top trends on nibbo.com for several days now, you’d see a LOT of activity on the internet about Manti Te’o and Lance Armstrong.  The conversations usually aren’t edifying; a lot of negative and trashy comments are circulating about Manti Te’o in particular.

I alerted 160+ Cru bloggers a few days ago that it’s a good time to use these trending topics to draw some people to a godly perspective.  I suggested they could post about lies and truth and the sin nature of man or something along those lines.  I’ve read some great posts from them and thought I’d share these blog posts with you Continue reading “Redeeming Online Conversations”

Josh and His Studies

Thank you, again, for praying for Josh after he lost his job at the nuclear plant. He’s feeling assured that pursuing a masters degree at the University of Central Florida was the right new direction to take. He’s particularly interested in power generation and is learning about turbines, heat transfer, and more.

For one of his finals in December, he had to do two engineering problems that took him all day to figure out and six pages of equations! He had quite a feeling of accomplishment figuring out these solutions and earned an A in both of his classes. Continue reading “Josh and His Studies”

Mattie: A Student’s Changed Life

 Mattie’s Story

In high school Mattie was involved with drinking and drugs. Raised in an agnostic Muslim home, she hated herself for her rebellious lifestyle, especially when her mother died of cancer in Mattie’s senior year.

Mattie started attending church with some friends and gave her life to Christ that same year, but she still struggled. Mattie explains:

“My relationship with my boyfriend eventually ended…. My entire sense of worth came from him… so at that point my only option was to turn back to God.  I had to figure out God’s love for me as well as how to love him back.  But I didn’t know where to start.”

Mattie joined a Bible study with Cru at Boston University in her freshman year.  This past spring break she attended our Big Break Conference in Panama City, Florida. While there Mattie heard a speaker describe God’s love: “He spoke of Jesus [washing] his followers’ feet. That picture made so much sense to me…They didn’t deserve this or earn it.  Rather, this was how much he loved them.”

“We woke up the next morning, and went to talk with people on the beach. … I saw a girl [who] was hopelessly drunk and … had cuts on her hands, sand all over her face, and vomit streaked throughout her hair. Her name was Sydney. Continue reading “Mattie: A Student’s Changed Life”
